As part of efforts to commemorate a global day dedicated to social media, which is a tool for social connection and building bridges in a digital world, Professor Dili Ofuokwu, a Professor of English Language & Acting Vice-Chancellor,
Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN), Ibusa, Delta State, Nigeria, has said that, ADUN made history as the First University in Nigeria to host a “World Social Media Day” as he termed the event a milestone worth celebrating, to showcase the distinguished facets of the esteemed institution to a wider audience, including prospective students, parents, educators and stakeholders.

Professor Dili Ofuokwu made this remark on Sunday, June 30, 2024 as ADUN University marks World Social Media Day in a grand-style held at the Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba Multi-purpose Hall Main Campus, Ibusa, Delta State, Nigeria as ADUN gives peace medal awards to Ogwashi-Uku & Ibusa Youth Leaders with a grand finale of a Novelty Match With Host Communities.

Social media is a digital technology that allows the sharing of ideas and information, including texts and visuals via networks and communities. In the world today, we have over 4.8 Billion social media users, representing 59.9% of the global population and 92.7% of internet users. Also, 75% of world’s population – age 13 years and above uses social media. World Social Media Day is an event aimed at inspiring your followers, a day to tell a story, thank your supporters and share how you are using social media. There is need for social workers to adopt innovative, Community led approaches that are grounded in indigenous wisdom and harmonious co-existence with nature.

Declaring the event open, ADUN Acting VC, Prof Dili Ofuokwu who was ably represented by ADUN Bursar, Captain Marcus Abani, while welcoming the participants; resource persons, students and staff, members of the press as he commended the Youth Leaders of the host communities; Ogwashi-Uku & Ibusa Youths for the peaceful coexistence and community relations ADUN has enjoyed since the Inception of the University.

ADUN Acting VC,while urging them on the need to continuously support the institution’s vision and mission statement, presented a “Peace Medal Award” to Youths Leaders of host communities; Comrade Chiedu Stanley- The President-General, Ogwashi-Uku Youths Development Association (Worldwide) & Comrade Ifeanyi Victor Asiodu- The President General, Ibusa Community Youths Association (Worldwide).

The event continued with a presentation by different resource persons, speakers with expertise in ICT, Media, Music & Community Development; which included amongst others are: Ferdinand Attah, Louis Esiobe and a 400 level Cyber Security student of Admiralty University, Ogunleye Dide Niel.

Staff and students of the institution as well as other participants were groomed on basic rudiments, concepts in sectors such as Media, Entertainment, ICT, Managing Cyber attacks, SDGs, Ethics and other global best practices on Social Media operations.

The event was held both physically and virtually with participants joining the live streaming link shared

Students participated in online contest with hashtags provided to promote the University as a Global University Educating Luminary leaders online with Entertainment & Media sectors competition -Songs & Spoken words.

Also, The Novelty football Match between the host communities was played between Ogwashi-Uku (OG) All Stars Football Club & ADUN Staff ended with 2:0 in favour of the institution.
