The President, Delta State Civil Society Organizations Community, and Founder/CEO of SAFE AID Foundation, Dr. Martins Kediehon, has said that the functions and important roles Civil Society Organizations play in the civic space cannot be over-emphasized in the society as he urges critical stakeholders in Delta State, Nigeria, governments, and the rest of the world to partner key actors for human capital, rapid growth and development.

Dr. Martins Kediehon made this remark today being on Saturday, June 17, 2023 while fielding questions from some group of Journalists in Asaba, Delta State capital as he stated that CSOs are the mirror of the society, enlightens he Delta State Civil Society Organizations Community leaders, governments on the functions and importance of CSOs to the citizens, urges critical stakeholders to wake up in their social contracts for social progress.

According to the Delta CSOs Leader, Civil society organizations play a vital role in promoting democracy, advocating for citizens’ rights, and fostering inclusive and sustainable development.
He added that, among other responsibilities, that “their multifaceted functions contribute to the advancement of society, acting as a crucial link between the government and its people. Also, Recognizing the need to enhance awareness about the role of civil society, we aim to educate and inform the public, particularly government workers, on the significance of these organizations”.

In the words of Dr. Martins Kediehon: ” The Functions of Civil Society Organizations included amongst others such as number one points, which on Advocacy and Policy Engagement. Civil society organizations serve as a voice for the voiceless, championing causes that benefit the larger society. Through effective advocacy and policy engagement, they work towards influencing government policies, promoting social justice, and safeguarding human rights.

The second points is on Community Development. Civil society organizations actively engage communities to identify and address their needs. They facilitate grassroots initiatives, encourage community participation, and implement projects that enhance social welfare, education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.

“We must not forget to have the points on Monitoring and Accountability as the third functions of CSOs to the society. These organizations act as watchdogs, monitoring government actions, and holding public officials accountable. Through independent research, investigations, and reporting, they promote transparency, integrity, and good governance, ensuring efficient utilization of public resources. The fourth functions of CSOs to the society is one area of Civic Education and Awareness. Civil society organizations play a crucial role in educating citizens about their rights, responsibilities, and the functioning of the democratic process. By organizing workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns, they empower individuals to participate actively in decision-making and civic activities”.

“The fifth functions of CSOs to the society is on the area of Social Services Delivery. Many civil society organizations provide essential services, especially to marginalized and vulnerable populations. They address social issues such as poverty, healthcare, education, gender equality, environmental sustainability, and disaster relief, bridging gaps where government provisions fall short. Also, the Importance of Civil Society Organizations included amongst others are: Ths first one is bridging the gap. Civil society organizations foster collaboration between the government, private sector, and citizens, facilitating constructive dialogue, partnerships, and joint initiatives. They bridge the gap between different sectors, promoting synergy and holistic development”.

“Citizen Empowerment is another areas of importance of CSOs to the society. Through their activities, civil society organizations empower citizens to actively participate in decision-making processes, creating a sense of ownership and accountability. They encourage public engagement, enabling citizens to contribute to the development and governance of their communities. Also, CSOs play the roles of Innovation and Experimentation as one the numerous importance in the civic space. Civil society organizations often serve as incubators for innovative solutions to societal challenges. With their flexibility and willingness to experiment, they pilot new approaches, address emerging issues, and advocate for progressive policies that benefit society as a whole”.

“Diverse Perspectives is another importance of CSOs. These organizations provide platforms for diverse voices, ensuring inclusivity and representation in the decision-making process. They amplify marginalized and minority voices, advocating for social equity and justice.
We urge all stakeholders, including government workers, to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of civil society organizations in Delta State.
